VIGIL GONZALES is pleased to present a solo exhibition of José Luis Martinat in Art Dubai 2022. The fair, taking place between March 11-13 features a selection of works from José Luis Martinat which have been triggered from the political, economic and religious belief in the mythical concept on progress in western society and how it’s been established in the rest of the world.
In the last few years Martinat has been working with the Grados family, which is a family of embroidery artisans. They have a workshop of religious art in Lima and they use embroidery techniques introduced to America by the Spanish during the colonial period. For over seven decades, the family Grados was tasked with the making of the presidential sash and other authority symbols. For this they use very fine material exclusively brought from Europe. Conversely for the pieces they made together they used ruined plastic fabrics found in industrial areas, construction zones and wholesale markets, mainly on the outskirts of the city.
